it's true. i am a little homesick. i think i just didn't have much time with my family before it was time to leave. but thanks to dios for gchat and skype.
so hola. a quick update.
como te va? como va vos? como te fue? --[no como estas here.]
buenos aires is a beautiful city. full of beautiful architecture, cafes, parks and people, it is all rather breath-taking. i love. i love. i love. the cafes.
and i satisfy the hungry caffeine monster that lies within. rawrr.
as with a transition to any new environment and culture, i am still getting used to it. listening and attempting to speak in spanish all day can sometimes make my head spin. i've gained more respect for all of the people i met in china who didn't grow up speaking chinese. but my spanish lessons begin next week. i hope to be hablabbing along in no time.
an unexpected thing in buenos aires is the cat-calls. maybe i took it for granted that men in china sort of minded their own business, more or less. here i get comments all the time: que bonita ! hola china ! que exotica ! que bella ! perhaps because asian people are rarer here, the culture is even more exotified.
but yeah. no one likes to feel like a piece of meat. in fact, i feel like some 羊肉串, or some otherwise...comida china.
nevertheless, life and work have started. people are very warm and give you kisses all the time. my schedule is busy but comfortable and there's not as much pressure as i had back in china. the city itself has a wonderful mix of nyc with its tall buildings and fashionable people and berkeley with its bohemian, artsy flare. i like, i like. me gusta mucho.

but, i must confess--every now and then my mind wanders and i think about forgetting this phd program, swimming over to china and spending the rest of my life collecting plastic bottles with a-yis.
it really doesn't sound so bad to me. sometimes i think we make too much of life and it really is all much simpler than we make it out to be, no?

competition for bottle collecting is getting tough, i hear...lots of new a-yis, it's getting harder to find those bottles.
don't worry, dr. liu, i'm sure those PhD skills will come in handy, even in a simple future life!
I told you you would love Buenos. :)
Wow your gchat convos with your parents are so different from the ones you have with me. To highlight:
nancy: hi
mom: I love you!
