interesting

"in argentina, there are approximately ten doctors for every qualified nurse."

wow.

i asked my advisor about this and he said it's due to the socialized educational system (read: free) and everyone would rather be a doctor than a nurse. as a result, a proliferation of doctors.

that means 1 in every 333 people in argentina is a physician.

rates of physicians/pop in other countries:

argentina: 300/100,000
china: 105/100,000
cuba: 590/100,000
usa: 256/100,000
france: 336/100,000
malawai: 2/100,000

but, like china, the majority are concentrated in urban areas. probably even those 2 from malawi.

man, taiwan is never listed as a country anymore. it was when i was a kid.

ah, politics. it reminds me of learning about the soviet union in elementary school and then slowly watching it crumble away. such arbitrary and yet not so arbitrary delineations we make with our pencils and erasers.

in other news, i got my fogarty completion certificate !

i'm done?

crazies.

random

dancing in the back of my mind are some meandering fragments of how probability statistics make an excellent metaphor for human life: delicately balanced on prerequisite randomness, with a religious adherence to unseen assumptions that keep everything normal and from which everything flows or it all falls apart; or not, and thus sending forth secular permutations of a sampling strategy that already is. lost in the shadow of mathematics' magnificent arts, it is predicated upon no such absolutes and certainties; rather, it stands as the devoid giacometti figurine, attenuated by the post-hoc and the a priori, a victim to the whims of extant conjectures.

...but all that for another day.

i just wanted to post another picture. that clown was a bit scary.

yikes. i can't believe i only have two more months left.

autumn

and fall is here !

...i have been waiting for you since october.

the crispness of the air echoes each crispy leaf i crunch on the concrete calle cuando caminando convenientemente con cada canción cantando que caía como cacahuetes chocolates.

olé.

in other news, i'm realizing research is much, much, much (mucho) delayed gratification.

much, much, much.

why is the road to theoretical parsimony filled with so many convoluted twists, turns, elevated hoops and impossible balancing acts?

meanwhile the time just ticks away.

but nancy, why so serious?
